The Birth Spool

Amie and Elizabeth over at The Birth Spool (if you don’t have their blog bookmarked, I recommend it!) interviewed me recently for their blog. The interview is found here - it’s a bit wordy (no surprise to those of you that know me in real life!).

Ok, that was to be with a little more punctuation :)

I enjoyed the interview. Thanks for continuing to open the dialogue.

I especially enjoyed your advice to those who may want to become a midwife. I am a doula and after going to the Trust Birth conference rediscovered my desire to become a midwife (I have always wanted to be since I was a teenager) But I realize now is not the time to do this, with 3 little boys at home. So I loved your quote.
“Pushing the goal of becoming a midwife is a lot like pushing a slow labor - it’s painful and the end result can often end up being far different than what we wanted. Honor the path - sometimes we learn more on the becoming than we do the being.”
Because I feel really strongly that I need to keep doing what I am doing, teaching CBE and doulaing. So thanks!

I too want to say thank you for your words to women who want to become midwives. Don’t rush it…I really needed to hear that.
Also, I LOVED that you pointed out that the midwifery profession is geared towards upper/middle class white women and is very class/race biased. I have been thinking alot about that lately and feel really discouraged by the fact that midwifery school is so expensive. I really want to get over this idea that is lodged in my brain that expensive education is the best type of education. Your wise words couldn’t have come at a better time.

    Discourse-Lengthy

This has been simmering in my mind’s back left burner for some time. I haven’t been sure the proper venue, proper medium but today’s the day because the juxtaposition has reached it’s crescendo.Since my pregnancy with my son 8 years…

Pam- I always enjoy reading your blog and hearing your thoughts.

I’d like to point out that Minnesota also has voluntary licensure for midwives; it’s been that way since midwifery became legal here in 1999.
