A recent post by lovely Laura Shanley discussed an upcoming American TV appearance by a UK woman that practices extended breastfeeding. Extended to the time when her child(ren) was 8 years old.
Anyone that knows me is already familiar with the fact that I am wholly supportive of child-led weaning. I also understand […]

we stopped doing things to mothers and babies at birth and immediately postpartum that are not helpful or beneficial to the health of both? Certainly the medical model and even the midwifery model of care uses various rituals in childbirth that are not necessary - but does it take an evidence-based article to stop […]

Rixa posted this link to a survey conducted by a fellow blogger that is seeking information on breastfeeding experiences of mothers who are LDS (Mormon). If you are an LDS mama, please consider taking this anonymous survey.

Is it just me or do other people live in communities that have lactation consultants/educators/assistants that dole out nipple shields right off the bat for nearly every woman?
It’s so frustrating.
In our area, it’s not only “oh, you’re having latch issues? here’s a nipple shield!” but it includes advice like, “put a bit of formula […]

I’ve always been amazed at the number of women that want their partners to bottle feed their breastfed babies so that their partner can “bond” with their baby. Honestly, it’s a reflection of our society’s warped idea that food = love. Not only that, but mothers still need to pump during the time […]

My rant about pediatricians - and most family doctors in general - could start with breastfeeding issues. How nearly all doctors are not required to take more than a few hours course on breastfeeding - and how artificial milk companies, a general distrust of a woman’s body/workings, and the belief that science is far more […]

this actually has nothing to do with my ducts…or my induced lactation attempts. but, my partner and I laughed when I made this silly comment about my milk coming in and my work towards an even small supply for our baby. she said I had to use it on my blog. […]

monday will mark two weeks on domperidone.
yesterday while pumping, I noticed large white droplets where previously they had been small clear or even greenish drops. there’s more and more fluid coming out during pumping, though not enough to drain in to the bottle of the pump.
sunday I will get an electric pump which will […]

Making milk is easy when you have a baby…in fact, our bodies start long before the birth of the baby. Once the placenta shears off the wall of the uterus, our body enacts many processes to begin actual milk production. Hormone levels rise and fall - and viola! There’s milk. Even if […]

Oh boy.
Why on earth does Target carry things like this? Target is one of the few places I can send clients to get Lansinoh, Avent Isis breast pumps and nipple shields or shells.
Why this? This is the second formula shirt for babies I’ve seen at Target. The other one had “Formula for Success” […]

Me nursing baby C, my partner’s baby, at our local gay pride event. I am wearing a dress that has a large keyhole opening - I just pushed it over and plop my boob out. In honor of World Breastfeeding Week, I am not being discreet!
I am not lactating, […]

Sure, we can show as much tittie on the cover of Cosmo, but heaven forbid we show a baby suckling from his mother’s breast on the cover of a parenting magazine.
Why is this image receiving so much controversy? Why are women - MOTHERS - writing in, angry about this cover? Ashamed? Hiding […]

N was having contractions yesterday, but they were still quite far apart. My assistant went over at 6:30 to see her and was greeted at the door by her husband who said that she was “ready”. Evidently, her contractions became closer together (around 5 minutes apart) about a half hour earlier. She was a […]
